FROM DREAMER TO DOER: MY UNIVERSITY JOURNEY SO FAR

As a young girl growing up in the dusty villages of the Eastern Cape, I had big dreams about what university life would be like. I have always imagined it as a fresh start and a chance to try new experiences, grow up, and discover new passions. Coming to study at the University of Johannesburg was a dream come true, and I was excited to explore a whole new world. As UJ celebrates its 20th anniversary, I find myself reflecting not just on the university's journey, but on my transformation as a student. Let's dive deep into how UJ has transformed me.

MY UJ STORY AS A FIRST YEAR STUDENT

I have always wanted to study at UJ. I would see the bright orange colours, hear stories about the complex campuses, and imagine myself roaming those walls. When I finally received my acceptance letter, it felt like the beginning of a bigger and brighter future. I still remember my first day on campus like it was yesterday. I was attending the First Year Seminar which was basically to introduce us to university and campus life. But my journey did not begin as easily as I had anticipated. I was overwhelmed by meeting different people from different cultures and tribes. I thought to myself "How am I going to survive here."  I was introverted and antisocial. The joy of university life was merged with concerns about fitting in and establishing friends. However, UJ has a way of nudging you out of your comfort zone. The campuses are alive with energy and diversity, making it difficult to stay on the edge for long.  Attending the seminar was the best idea because not only did it equip me with skills to navigate the campus, but it also helped me blend in smoothly, build meaningful relationships and it laid a strong foundation for my personal growth and academic success.

GROWTH IN AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

I can now state with confidence that UJ has changed me in ways I never thought possible in my second year. From the first year, I was not sure about my career direction. However, through the guidance of my lecturers and guest lecturers from the field, who would link theory with real world, I got to understand the career path that I want to follow. The daily lectures played an important role in my personal and academic growth. I can now attest that my critical thinking skills and learning ability have improved. The lectures always encourage us to push limits and see the big picture.

On my academic journey, I have struggled with time management and balancing my social life with  academic life which led to a heavier workload. I found it hard to handle everything, and that almost led me to anxiety and depression. But through UJ PsyCaD services it did not get to that stage, I was able to get help to overcome everything.

Fast forward to 2025, I decided to join the UJ Community Engagement, and it has been one of the most transforming experiences of my life at UJ. Joining UJCE offered me a sense of belonging and purpose, allowing me to interact with others who share my desire to make a difference in the community. Through volunteering and outreach programs, I have witnessed first-hand how the university encourages students to give back. I have learnt the value of empathy, teamwork, and leadership. These are real lessons that go much beyond what textbooks can teach.

HOPE FOR UJ'S FUTURE

I am proud to be in the orange army. It has shaped me to be the person I am today. UJ is the symbol of knowledge, innovation and progress. My hopes for UJ's future are that it will continue to thrive as a leading university that not only succeeds academically but also promotes inclusivity, social justice and community development. The bright orange colour resembles the ability to mould future leaders who are capable of addressing our world's complicated challenges.
TO MANY MORE YEARS OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE TO THE UNIVERSITY OF POSSIBILITIES! #UJ@20

  1. Remember, you won't always have everything figured out, but it's a learning curve in which you have to take control and remember your goal. Time management is key in university, and you're in an environment that enables you to reach out, seek meaningful friendships, and build academic skills along the way. Never lose yourself; we are all different, striving to be our better selves. So, my advice would be to create a better you. Pressure is temporary, but resilience is forever.

Soo touching but relieving gal. FORWARD EVER AND BACKWARD NEVER 🫢
Am very much glad Somnci to learn and realize how God has hid and protected you amidst all trials and temptations thus far. We actually know for a fact that, whatever experiences and hardships, you've gone thru, the harshness, hardships and strains are a way too hard/ difficult than we could imagine, but God is ever good.
My advice for those 1st years is they, one needs to involve God in ones life and soak yourself into a prayerful life. Guard your choices and make sound and sober decisions and allow God to direct your foot paths.
